I don't get why injuries are an argument for this

If you lose a starter in the pre-season then you at least have time to groom the replacement and groom the new player you add to the roster.

During the season, if he's lost he's still lost. Less time to lessen the effect by grooming the replacement and adding a player to the roster who you also get to groom.
