It's extremely weird in the sense that it's not at all like talking face to face. But we're so used to it now, I think we forget about that weirdness, and that weirdness provokes endlessly unnecessary static -- or worse. It's been normalized, even though there is nothing normal about virtual communications. In "real life," we just wouldn't say 95% of the things we say here to others, face to face. We would almost never use the same "tone." We wouldn't be so instantly dismissive, or insulting, or aggressively trying to "win" each debate. That's just not how the vast majority of humans communicate offline.
I look back now at some of the board battles in which I participated and I just can't
believe I ever cared enough to go at it like that. It embarrasses me to no end just to
think about the wasted time. And, yes, it
is wasted time. Life is waaay too short to spend it yelling at someone you can't see, behind their screen, as you sit in front of yours.
As for "agree to disagree." Yeah, if it helps people break free of the virtual loop, cool. Whatever works, as long as it's civil.
In short, in my not so humble opinion, we should all lighten up around here.
