Well said and I think you're probably right.
So if that is correct, then what might be the accepted contract?
BTW: there is no way they traded for him without having a pretty good idea what it was going to cost to retain him.
My original guess weeks ago based largely on Adams and Jeffrey's was $11.5M.
However, because Spotrac's valuation was so low, I decided to do my own eval. using their methodology based on 4 year production instead of 2.
Doing that, brought in the Adams and Jeffrey's comparable plus a couple of comparables that they used for those players.
I kept the Kenny Stills comp. from their current Watkins eval. because it was the only good one.
Here are the 6 names I used in my evaluation:
Kenny Stills (signed Avg. $8M @ 24)
Devante Adams (signed Avg. $14.5M @ 25)
Randall Cobb (signed Avg. $10M @ 24)
Alshon Jeffrey (signed Avg. $13M @ 27)
Doug Baldwin (signed Avg. $11.625M @ 27)
DeSean Jackson (signed Avg. $11.166M @ 30)
FWIW, Devante Adams was the most similar comp. when using 4 years instead of 2. However, I wouldn't expect Watkins to get near that because their career stats are reversed. Adams started soft and finished with 2 strong years. Watkins started with 2 strong years and followed that with 2 sub par years. Recent production should be weighted more heavily.
Averaging the production of those 6 players over the 4 years prior to them signing their contracts using the same methodology of Spotrac:
$11.84 Million Avg. per year. Also note, this methodology doesn't take into account inflation. Cobb signed his contract the longest ago in 2015. The salary cap has increased by nearly 25% since then.
