2018 NFL Draft: Rams 7-round mock draft....

January 31, 2018 07:24AM
following Senior Bowl. Mostly defense....might be good.

Round 1: Arden Key, EDGE, LSU Height: 6'6". Weight: 265lbs
Key is a polarizing prospect. He has the potential to be an elite edge rusher and showed flashes of that at LSU, but there are off-field concerns and questions about his commitment to football. He left the Tigers for a period of time last year, which is never something you want to see from a first-round prospect. However, the risk is worth the reward with Key. Wade Phillips and Sean McVay are two guys who can extract the most from him and turn Key into a dynamic outside linebacker for the Rams.

Round 3: Tarvarus McFadden, CB, FSU Height: 6'2". Weight: 197lbs
McFadden was a guy who received first-round buzz last year, but he put together a disappointing 2017 season. He wasn’t nearly as aggressive as he previously was, didn’t show off the instincts he previously displayed regularly and his coverage ability dropped off a bit. Like Key, the potential is there, though. Phillips has a long history of getting a lot out of cornerbacks in his scheme, and at 6-foot-2, he has the size that Wade covets at the position.

Round 4: Kemoko Turay, EDGE, Rutgers Height: 6'5". Weight: 252lbs
Turay may not be around at this point in the draft after he put on a show at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, but if he slides to Round 4, the Rams should pounce. He doesn’t offer much in coverage, but as a pure pass rusher, he has a boatload of talent. The Rams can utilize him as a pass-rush specialist early on before playing him more regularly as he adjusts to the responsibilities of an outside linebacker.

Round 5: Micah Kiser, LB, Virginia Height: 6'2". Weight: 240lbs
Kiser is unlike the two linebackers Los Angeles currently has starting inside in the fact that he’s a big bruiser. Many have pegged him as a “thumper” in the middle of a defense because of his size and physicality, which is exactly what the Rams need. Alec Ogletree will be around for a few more years, but Mark Barron could be released this offseason. Kiser could step in and play relatively early.

Round 6: (from Detroit): Durham Smythe, TE, Notre Dame Height: 6′ 4″ Weight: 236 lbs
The Rams showed a great deal of interest in tight ends at the Senior Bowl and McVay said earlier this month that they need more out of the position in 2018 after relying heavily on 11 personnel. Smythe isn’t an athletic pass-catcher like Gerald Everett, but he does have good hands and holds up well as a blocker. With his 6-5 frame, Smythe has great size to play at the next level, too.

Round 6: (from Buffalo): Bradley Bozeman, C, Alabama Height: 6′ 4.5″ Weight: 322 lbs
Bozeman started every game for Alabama the past two years after replacing Ryan Kelly inside, and while he’s not nearly as talented as the current Colts center, he does have potential. At the very least, his size boosts his stock as a draftable player, but he’ll likely be a backup for the first year or two in the NFL. John Sullivan is a free agent, but if the Rams retain him, Bozeman can learn for a year under him.

Round 6: Jaleel Scott, WR, New Mexico State Height: 6′ 5″ Weight: 190 lbs
Scott is a guy with No. 1 receiver potential but lacks top-end speed and twitch when it comes to quickness. At 6-foot-5, that’s expected, but the future is still bright for this talented receiver. He has long arms which give him a huge catch radius to work with. He could easily go a few rounds before this point, but with so many solid receivers on the board in 2018, Scott might slide a bit.

Round 7: Nick Deluca, LB, North Dakota State Height: 6′ 3″ Weight: 245 lbs
Deluca was all over the place in practice at the Senior Bowl, showing great work ethic and instincts at linebacker. Although he isn’t a great athlete and lacks quickness inside, Deluca’s motor never stops and he always finds himself around the ball. As a late-round pick or even free agent, Deluca would be a worthwhile addition to the Rams.
