When you're that age and one of the best in your field, you're willing to sacrifice a lot, even to a degree that's less than purely logical. How many fathers never really got to know their kids because they were devoted more to their careers? And at the same time, there are always self-justifying reasons for such things: "I'm sacrificing (my free time) FOR my family." Or in Wilson's case: "It's for my team. I'll probably be OK, and even if I'm not this is the price to be the best and I'll deal with it later."

Age and experience (in life, not football) is what brings the perspective you're correctly sounding.
