Look, obviously there is a limit to how much any player should be paid. Obviously that is what the Rams and Donald are negotiating over. There is a limited number of things it is rational for us to say as fans. Those things include:
-Aaron Donald is the best DT in football
-DT is one of the most important positions in the NFL (I would argue even more than DE in today's NFL)
-Aaron Donald is one of the best players in the NFL
-Aaron Donald deserves to be paid a lot of money
They do not include:
-"Aaron Donald is a diva." None of us know anything about him personally, and this situation is the result of AD's transcendent talent, combined with the awful rookie pay scale, combined with his aggressive agent. It is ridiculous to attack him personally, especially since he hasn't said anything to the press during this whole affair.
-"Aaron Donald is not that important" or "Aaron Donald didn't save us from 4-12" Please. This is not basketball.
-"Trade him." For what? An inferior player and a bunch of picks? What is the point of a draft pick? That's right, to find talent. Best case scenario, you draft someone as good as Donald....and end up right back where you started.
Here is my position:
Aaron Donald is an amazing player. The Rams should do everything they possibly can, within reason, to keep him on the team.
I don't really see how anyone can have a position that is different or more nuanced than that. We just know too little. That's why I feel this topic isn't worth discussing.
