Los Angeles Rams OT Andrew Donnal is a good example of what a solid bench offensive lineman is supposed to be.

As the Rams’ “6th man” on the offensive line, Donnal upped his game in 2016 by playing in all 16 contests, including four solid starts to end the season. Similar to former Ram Garrett Reynolds, Donnal can play both Guard and Tackle in a pinch and even served as an extra offensive lineman in jumbo packages in 2016 as the first man off the bench.

Apparently, Donnal’s tape and practice has earned some respect from the new offensive-minded coaching staff and new Offensive Line Coach Aaron Kromer, as Donnal was listed as one of the three “key contributors” in the media guide for training camp.

Roster Battle

Donnal is expected to have a somewhat secure position as the versatile “swing” guy who can play at least the guard and tackle spots across the offensive line. Think of Donnal being a younger and improving Garrett Reynolds or for you older Rams fans, Adam Goldberg.

With the starting five not being changed much since OTAs, Donnal may still have a chance to push Jamon Brown out of a starting spot if he can impress enough at right guard to move Rob Havenstein back out to right tackle.

Expectations

As a third-year pro looking to make a positive impression on Kromer, this year is crucial for Donnal. Kromer has mentioned that there is young talent in the building. With Donnal being listed as a “key contributor,” it is possible (likely?) that he is one of the players Kromer is referring to.

Chances of Making the Final Roster (7/10)

While the Rams are not likely to keep 10 guys on the offensive line this year as the previous regime did last season, Donnal is likely the 6th man for the Rams offensive line barring an injury or other additions.

The starting lineup of Greg Robinson Andrew Whitworth, Rodger Saffold, John Sullivan, Rob Havenstein and Jamon Brown seems to be who the Rams are rolling with, and Donnal fits right after that. However, the staff seems to really like Jake Eldrenkamp and put in a waiver claim for Austin Blythe as well, so it is possible that Donnal may have some competition for an interior OL spot.
