I'm not sure they are depending on his hands getting better. They just need a deep threat, someone that can get deep quickly and has to have help covering him deep because the DB may not be able to keep up. The threat has to be taken care of by the Defense. Even if they don't think he can catch the ball, they still have to cover him. And, that is what McVay is counting on. Spread the D out, make them have to cover too big an area. He doesn't have to catch like DeSean, just get deep like him. That will be enough.
