He said he was finished

I recall reading that he was tired of playing and was finished giving his body up and wanted to retire in one piece. If I recall he had a couple of minor but nagging injuries later in his career and they may have been enough for him to say he was done.

Plus I think Detroit holds his rights for 2 league years after he retired.
