Rams OC Rob Boras on Jeff Fisher's firing: 'We let him down'

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Jeff Fisher is gone now, but an entire coaching staff remains in his wake, grinding out the final weeks of a lost season with the understanding that most-- perhaps even all -- of them will be gone when the new year comes and a new head coach arrives.

One of those men is Rob Boras, winding down his first full season as the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator.

How much blame he holds in all of this is impossible to determine, but the fact is the Rams' offense is statistically the worst in the NFL -- in first downs, in yards, in points and so much else. The new coach will either be offensive-minded or will overhaul the offensive side of the ball or, likely, both. And Boras, a tight-ends coach in his previous 12 years in the NFL, will probably be left to seek employment elsewhere.

“I think we’re all tired," Boras said, speaking for the coaches in general. "It’s been a long go since leaving St. Louis. A lot of us sleep here. A lot of us are away from our families. But, again, that’s no excuse. We signed up for this, and we’re here to do it."

That, Boras said, is basically the motto for a coaching staff that is operating under special-teams coordinator and interim coach John Fassel these last few weeks.

"It wasn’t an easy week last week," Boras said. "I think everybody knows how strongly we all feel for Coach. But everybody has to put their best foot forward, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do. Nobody is leaving the office any later or any earlier. Nobody is showing up any later. We’re committed to win these next two games and do whatever we can do.”

The Rams, led by owner Stan Kroenke and COO Kevin Demoff, fired Fisher two Mondays ago, the day after a 42-14 loss to Atlanta that was their eighth in nine games. The rest of the team then played a Thursday night game in Seattle and promptly lost 24-3 while still reeling from Fisher's sudden dismissal. Boras said he was "disappointed, sad" that Fisher was let go, 13 games into his fifth year with the Rams.
