If someone throws in the "excuses" mantra to me they just come across as trying to shut down the discussion. They don't add anything.

Yes...BUT they need to cut back on defensive penalties to do that.
That's just true IMO.
I always saw the "excuses" mantra as a bad argument and an effort to discredit an analysis people don't like instead of coping with an analysis people don't like and debating it reasonably.
