My son worked on the U-Verse side in Arizona, and he explained the debacle then. We had Cox for internet there and it was excellent, both in service and performance and it was cheaper. When we moved to Indiana, we had basically only two options, U-Verse or Xfinity. We went with an introductory offer with AT&T and it has been bad in every conceivable way relative to our experience with Cox. Starting with having to abandon the Linksys routers and modems I owned because you are forced to rent and use their crappy equipment or purchase a very narrow and expensive range of "compatible" choices for yourself.
The internet service has been inconsistent and unreliable at best and the customer service basically useless. I am not alone as you are the lone positive story I've encountered here about that service. A friend of mine here just recently kicked them to the curb. Most people I talk to about it just put up with it but aren't fans. The DirecTV side has undergone changes to the negative since the merger as well. They killed a link to my external hard drive on one of the receivers I owned with a software update they pushed, had no idea how to resolve it, so I ended up with a new main Genie unit, that wouldn't stay connected with the AT&T modem/router that I'm forced to use by ...well, them. They submitted a tech ticket to resolve the issue, but never did. I ended up resolving it on my own by buying a new router and essentially hacking it in with their modem/router combo. When I tell them they are responsible for their equipment not being compatible, they claim they are two separate companies, so it's not their fault. When I tell them I want to unbundle without it changing my service, they tell me they're the same company, so they can't do that. And that's only the half of it. The misinformation and errors on their customer service side has been endless.
Little of what they've promised has been what they've delivered and the little that's been delivered has been satisfactory, yet they still want to hold me to the "contract" rather than simply allowing me to leave. I'm in the process of dispute right now, which includes initial efforts towards litigation. All I want is out of an agreement that any reasonable observer would agree they've failed to uphold on their end.. But, they want to fight. So, that's what they're getting. It's not even about the money for me now. I'm willing to lose money at this point just to get them to do the right thing.
Once free, I will never go near that company again. You can have them all to yourself.
