He might be, but we don't know that it's literally intelligence. Guys learn different ways and he had the same teacher the entire time. And it's not like ANY Rams Oline guy seemed to develop.....again, with the same teacher. Take it for what its worth. But can Snead be that wrong on ALL the Oline players drafted during his tenure? I think the Rams will have enough protection for him. A 2 TE offense really helps in that regard as does a quick passing game. Not saying this will be a top notch OL, but you don't need one to do well. The Pats seem to do it with lesser guys and rookie plug ins year after year. Where's the All-Pros on the Pats OL? I've always felt that it is a mental issue with him. He has all the physical talent in the world. Is it lack of discipline? Doesn't like football that well? No focus? Immaturity? Not enough mental horsepower to do the job? Can't translate the practice field to the game? I just don't know. But certainly the pressure on him is far less on the Right side. That's is a very harsh judgment. It has you going against a top notch offensive coaching staff, a professional GM, NFL scouts, a HC who was a TE coach with much success and OC for a team that used undersized TEs about as well as it is done. Max, I'm just as disappointed as you are with this team. But to think that 2 years ago you were the lone ranger about wanting Fisher fired? Please. But we have a new regime with a new approach. And no way is this roster bereft of NFL players like what Fisher inherited. We're losing guys now to big dollar FA contracts because we can't keep them all. No doubt speed is good. But the best WRs in history vary all over the map. Jerry Rice....times in the 40 range from the low 4.5s to 4.71 is the most official Anquan Boldin......from 4. 6 to 4.8 depending on who did the timing. Not that I know any better. But every year the pundits make predictions post draft on who had "good" drafts and who didn't. It goes by a combination of the guys who pick highest always get better grades (duh) and teams that are successful get good grades (I don't care if the Pats drafted Serena Williams as an Edge Rusher they'd get an A"). McVay's offense is going to be pass-first, pass to run, offense. McVay is a match up guy. He's talked about it. So he wants a variety of skill players to take advantage of a what a D will give them. Thus the want of a pass catching FB. The FB they selected is all about passing. Watched some video and that kid can really catch the ball. Very natural pass catcher. I thought Fisher's drafts made no sense. They want to be a power running team, and they pick up a midget slot receiver in Austin. Then they throw in the kitchen sink to get a prolific passer. Then they have a bunch of rookies and 2nd year guys as his oline. Then a bunch of late round picks and misfits and butter fingered guys for Recievers. Some here think that Austin has a year or so left with the Rams before they cut him and save the money. Maybe. Certainly if McVay can't turn him into a consistent star this year, the odds aren't good. After this year, there would be a net $3mil savings to cut him. There were some pretty candid remarks from Snead and McVay that answers some questions. Whether a person agrees with their viewpoints or rationale is another issue. 1) No Olinemen for a couple of reasons. First, after OTA and mini-camp Kromer was satisfied that he had the guys he needed. Second, Kromer and others felt that the guys they had were better than the rookies they could draft. But when I see guys like Mayock and Boylehart say that Everett could be a Pro-Bowl player sooner than later, why the doom and gloom? And, for those who say "Lamp was a 1st round guy". Apparently not. I'm not advocating that our Oline is OK. I'm saying that the coaching staff must think it is. I'm not advocating that Gerald Everett, for instance, was the best choice of an offensive playmaker at that slot; but it is the choice that a guy who was a TE's coach, and ran a successful TE oriented offense, and is now our HC has some reason to believe was the best choice. 6 foot. Skinny as a rail. Fast as a Cheetah (4.35 at his Pro day). Good RAC. Could this be the Rams pick in the 4th? Something akin to Deshaun Jackson? Although we are likely to see a Center drafted in round 4, this draft tells me that after OTAs and Mini-camp, the Rams coaches have determined that they can fashion a functional Oline with the players they have. It is the ONLY explanation for not sitting there at 37 and taking Lamp. For what it is worth, Boylehart thinks he has Pro Bowl ability. Never saw him play. But McVay knows something about this kind of TE. Mayock also likes him. What a #1 WR means is a dominant WR who causes coverage to role to him and is the #1 target. The go to guy. The Alpha dog of the WRs. Invariably they are at least 6'1" and can dominate many CBs. It is more about characteristics than almost anything else. It is not unlike a workhorse RB as opposed to a 2 down or specialist RB that is part of a rotation. Why in the world would the Seahawks have considered Mahommes? They have a young All-Pro QB just entering his prime. Unless he has said that he's only going to play 2 or 3 more years (no way), it would be utterly pointless to spend a 1st round pick on a back-up. Ergo......I don't buy this for one second. What he said, is what I said he said. He didn't say to avoid guys like these. The point is, when has a great WR been the catalyst to win a Superbowl? It is NOT great WRs that get you to Superbowls, or win them. It is the trenches, it is D (especially pass rusher), it is QBs. His point is that it is not needed to have great WRs or even 1st round WRs to get to the Superbowl. And it is true. "Great" WRs are overrated. And, #1 WR (the concept) is overrated if not outdated. And, you can get a good WR almost anywhere in the draft. That's his point and I tend to agree. This is the era of the specialist WRs who do one, maybe two, things very well.
