In the case of my watch, when I say GPS I am referring to tracking the mileage of my rides and the occasional runs that I then sync to an app on my smartphone when I am done. I don’t really use it for mapping out a route, or how to get to back home. I also have a Garmin cycling computer that I mount in my bike and does the same thing but also has a mapping function on it that can show me the way home if needed. However, on the odd occasion where I have found myself feeling a little uncertain of my location in the middle of the bush in the winter, I went straight to Google Maps on my phone. So in my experience nothing beats a smartphone for GPS type things. I’ve never used a Garmin handheld though.
