I'm not sure who castrated music but it hasn't recovered. Seems like Pearl Jam remained unscathed... Meanwhile Nirvana, STP, Soundgarten and AIC all lost their front men to suicides or drugs. How can one genre have that much... depression. Punk was anger, Grunge pain, 2000 on completely gutless. I would listen to disco over today's music... and to be honest there is a lot of pre-2000 music being completely ripped off and being packaged as new. But it's kind of hard to give it props when you know its just a carbon copy of an older original.
At least the bands in the 60's and 70's used their musical influences to create something new. I thought with all the self recording software that great new music would just start flooding the airwaves. Seems the opposite is happening. It's telling when a band like Tool can knock Taylor Swift off the top of the charts. Music now expressly written for children... add a few curse words and you have a great formula for tweens and teens to spend their parents money.... and the musically impaired adults as well.
