1981.. I met a friend of mine at a local bar to do some drinking.. I parked my Bradley GT (Ferrari body on a VW frame engine lol) and, as I was walking in, saw a shady guy eye-balling me outside the bar.. Screw him - lets drink!
About two hours into the drinking binge, the waiter comes up to me and says, "you have a phone call at the bar".. What? I didn't even know anyone knew I was there..
I pick up the phone and my brother says, "where is your car?"
I reply, "in the parking lot you nimrod"
He replies, "No, it isn't"
"WHAT?"
He goes on to tell me the police called our house (we both still lived at home) and told him my car had been abandoned about half a mile from the bar.. Excitedly I hang up, run to my table, tell my friend "we gotta go!" then think to myself, "I don't know where it is".. I run outside and my car IS gone.. that was so weird..
So, we're both pretty buzzed, he's driving, we have NO idea where to go.. Seriously, I yell, "go to Dunkin Dounuts! there HAS to be a cop there!".. so we drive there and NO cops.. we drive up and down the main drag street and find a cop who had pulled someone over.. I get out and ask him to radio in and find out where my car is.. he does and we go there, and there sits my car, blocking both lanes of the street, in a HIGH dollar neighborhood with mansions etc..
the car had been hot wired.. wires were hanging etc.. I think we towed it home where I re-wired everything and all was good - except every time got in that car I felt violated..
I never understood why the guy who stole it abandoned it half a mile from where he stole it.. it WAS a standard, VERY weird car to drive, and stood out like a turd in a punchbowl.. there were NO cars in town that looked ANYTHING like that one.. so, maybe he realized it was too obvious a car.. or he couldn't drive it.. whatever.. weird that he abandoned it blocking both lanes of the street, tho.. They never found him - probably never looked..
So, one day I'll tell you about the time I was driving that same car at 2am, came up to a busy intersection where one car was sitting at a red light, perpendicular to me.. I had the green light and as I entered the intersection, saw pull out and BAM smacks me right in the driver side door.. that car didn't actually have doors.. it had these plexiglass gill wing doors.. so, anyways, I had been going so fast, I thing I did two 360s and ended up in the bank's property that was cattycorner to where I had been hit.. as I stopped, I see the car speeding off..
My head and broken the plexiglass gull wing door in half.. I look out and gas is POURING out of the car.. I try to open the broken gull wing door, but it wouldn't open.. I kept thinking some idiot will drive by and throw a cigarette butt and I'll go up in flames.. I get perpendicular to the door, on my back, and kick the door with both feet as hard as I can.. on about the 4th kick it opened up and I got out..
Right at that second, at 2am, a tow truck just happens to drive by and say, "need a tow?" which I was always suspicious of.. the police never found that guy, either, and told me even they were suspicious that the tow truck guy may have set it up for business..
Friendship is like peeing your pants.. Everybody can see it, but only you can feel the warmth..
