Weather looked kinda ominous around 5:30-6:00 PM..... not concerned so much about wet, but the clouds had a bit of Lightning "Look" to them. The show was at the Greensboro Amphitheater, so the lighting would be a big factor on the show going off on time (7 PM)....Saved parking money by going to my buddies business across the street. Went to scarf down a couple BBQ sandwiches, took a travel bottle of Daniels and walked on over to the show.
KWS was just starting up and we got our seats, the skies kinda parted, no rain, no lightning....save for the fingers of KWS on his geetar!!! That guy can bring it....Never saw him before, but back in the day, think it was 2000 he was playing underneath us at our Hotel in Seattle. We never heard of him so we just went out, came back to the room and went to bed, that cat kept us up till like 2 AM with his music! He musta been like late teens back then I guess....They said he sounds like the reincarnation of SRV and I must say he does to me as well. Sat in a chair all set and blues after blues was rolling.
He went off and they set up for ZZ Top. The new bass player was doing a reincarnation of Dusty Hill, BEARD and all.....did a great job with those shoes to fill. I saw them back in the day doing their Texas Tour in '77......they couldn't touch that show with that crazy zoo act, but the clothes and the guitars and the drumming of Beard was great. I am a fan of the old stuff, la Grange, Rio Grand Mud, Fandango, Tres Hombres...when they went on MTV I liked them but not as much.....they started out with la Grange, and went non stop song after song for a good 30 minutes or so before saying a word.
Billy was a riot when he spoke and got everybody into it.....even broke out those crazy fuzzy body guitars.....The place kinda looked like a biker rally with the audience, but everyone was great.....place is supposed to hold around 7000 and it looked like it....we had seats, but there was plenty of people sitting in the grass areas in the rear.....
We paid around $50 per seat (3) sitting in the grass was $26....but we are too old to sit below knee level so we had to get the seats, and no one had a bad seat.....They didn't do Tush, thought they may have ended with it, wanted that tune bad, but can't complain at all.....great show, weather cleaned up and after our exit the sky did a show with the clouds lighting up...at just the right time.
