just from the 70's alone , I couldn't guess how many there were
seemed like alot of them were short lived and just summer replacement programing , so networks didn't have to air reruns during the summer
not sure if the guest stars were network adjacent or not , were guest stars would only appear , on the network they ever that were signed under contract with
just seems like alot of those guest stars made their rounds ,
but also liked all the unusual act they would have , magicians , axe throwers , plate spinners , a family with 17 kids , from some Eastern European country you'd never heard of that does acrobats and juggling , ventriloquist , animal acts
that was some good TV
they have shows like America's Got Talent , but there is so much drama , and pause for affect , and the same acts every week , I just don't find those types of shows entertaining
give me Donny and Marie , 4 songs , one guest star , , and 17 different skits all crammed into 52 minutes any day of the week
The Dean Martin Variety Show was just a bit before my time , but I do own them all on DVD , always loved it that Dean Martin never rehearsed , everyone else on the show did , but Dead would just show up on the day of filming , and read his lines of a cue cards , which always made it so funny , because he never knew what was going to happen either ..................lol
but I do remember watching Dean Martins Celebrity Roast , now that was some funny stuff , I was always hoping Foster Brooks was going to be on that weeks episode
don't think we'll ever see anything like that again
I know they have Celebrity Roast still today , but it's usually just foul mothed comedians I'd never heard of
but Dean Martin had the biggest names in Hollywood , don't think we'll ever see a show like that again
