but I can say this... not ever having had a drum lesson I learned to do things differently than the 'according to Hoyle' method. I do not consider that a plus.
Over the years as I learned about 'proper procedure' I changed up... and found the 'according to Hoyle' method better. But I'm talking very few things here.
right now I'm making a major change. I bought a practice drum pad about a month ago... first one I've ever had. I'm switching to matched grip... having played conventional grip my entire life with just a small exception.... I have always played some songs with matched grip... but only a few and only those that didn't require anything requiring very quick strokes. Every day, a few times a day, I practice this for about 15 minutes:
(RRLLRRLL) - (RLR_ - LRL_ RLR_ - LRL_) - (RRLLRRLL) - (R_RRL_LLR_RRL_LL) - (RRLLRRLL) - and ending with the classic paradiddle - (RLRR LRLL RLRR LRLL). Then repeat, slowly increasing speed. As soon as I make any mistake at all... even a small error in tempo... I slow down and restart.
After a month... I'm better, not good.
I can still do the above faster using conventional grip.
I've got a gig Sat. night... it will be my first where I attempt to use matching grip for the entire gig. Chances I will succeed? 0%. I give myself 3 songs before I say, "To hell with it".
