Its -for the most part-data driven -thx to whoever invented the computer chip. There are times it doesn't work and those are the times that old school people-like me-argue decision should be made on the field and not on a screen. The counter to that is that data driven calls are for the long run and over time will always pay off but its a given they will fail occasionally like any other on the field decisions. But the data says the failures are worth it over time.
It seems clear to me that baseball has far more schematic thinking-like chess-than either football or basketball. One reason its my favorite sport. With players moving all over the field of play on every pitch its mind boggling. You don't see it a lot on tv but at the game you can see the movement (chess) on every pitch-not just every batter but every pitch to every batter. It's also why we see batters more focused on home runs because it is so difficult to get a hit in the field of play now.
