think I could possible come up with more antiquated phrases?
I AM behind the times... I had no idea that's how the playoffs work.. how long has it been like that?
Found this explanation on Wikipedia:
The MLB started having a Wild Card team in 1994. But it was on November 17, 2011, MLB announced that it would be adding
two wild card teams to the postseason. The two wild card teams in each league face each other in a one-game playoff. The winner of this game advances to meet the top seed in the Division Series. The revised playoff system began with the 2012 season.
The 2011 St Louis Cardinals qualified to be a WC team on the LAST DAY of the regular season. And then went on to win it all! I'll never forget Albert Pujol's response to a ton of analysts and players from other teams who complained that the Cardinals had no business even being in the playoffs. They went on and on about the Cardinals NOT being the best team in baseball.
Pujols said: "The Cardinals were the best team when it counted."
People may not like it, but he was and still is... absolutely right.
