There are way too many variations. I think the human element of Umps is part of the game, so I don't think anyone should expect perfection every game. But right now, strike zones fluctuate with almost every Ump, every game, every Pitcher.

It's always been that way. It's just that we're more aware of the strike zone because of the ever present box on tv screen. And to waterfield's point below, with the velocity of today's pitchers the task of calling balls and strikes is that much more difficult. To his point re. having the designated umpires behind the plate, the physical toll on those umpires would be too much.
