I got PF when I was in my 40s. A friend at work saw me hobbling and told me what it was. He had it and said I needed more arch support.
I went to the foot doc and he said, yep, and he gave me a pain injection because of the pain and built me a custom arch support. Bottom line is that after a few weeks the pain went away. Since then I've always worn very high arch supports, I actually wear two different ones together, like Dr. Scholls, and it's been no problem. One time however, I started wearing new shoes without my additional arch supports and after a few weeks the pain came back. I just popped the arch supports back in and was fine in a day or two.
So for me, and my friend, arch supports alone did the trick.
