Except... she's not just any athlete. She's considered the GOAT.... the best gymnast of ALL TIME. She's the frickin' pinnacle of the sport... not just the face of gymnastics. And at the age of 24, it's remarkable that she was competing at all, let alone at a superior level. and doing things no one else in the sport has ever done. Most gymnasts are at their peak like from age 16-20. It may look like the same thing as any old athlete, but it's not. Re-read the article again and try to see it from HER point of view.
Frankly I admire her for recognizing that her mind ain't right and that forging ahead could have caused a whole lot of pain and suffering for herself AND her team.
Why is mental stress viewed as "weak"? I don't get that. If your mind ain't right... in practically everything we do in life... it's true that nothing else will be, either. Simone explained quite well why she felt she couldn't compete today and why it will be day to day after this. To me the writing's been on the wall for a while now. I can give the girl a break. Not sure why that's so hard for others to do but to each his own.
