Why bikinis in the sand and not during 6 person in a gym?

I suspect it has to do with the difficulty of running and jumping in the sand as opposed to a hardwood floor. If that's the reason then logic says they should be nude. Then again so should the men. Maybe all sports everyone should be naked. Certainly a lot less injuries in the NFL.
