our backyard is set up for all kinda birds to visit. Our pond is set up with Pickerel and Japanese Iris surrounding 1/2 of it. the iris goes into bloom 1st of Spring and goes out like mid March, the the greenery stays all year. the Pickerel blooms spring thru summer Hummingbirds love it. have some kinda small bloom red plant about 4 feet from our upper level deck and they love that as well. begonias, passion flowers, day lilies, water lilies....they love lantana too...They don't go for the water lilies or passion flowers they just add colors to the eyes...
So as they come around they trip around the yard plant to plant and "HUM" like 4 feet from you then take off into the trees. Very territorial guys they stand off against each other to "rule the roost". They are Red Throated Hummingbirds in our area, go all around the eastern area of the country. Florecent green bodies and the guys have red metallic throats....the gals are plain with the same green, but white every where else...but they are sure mean a$$ towards others of their kind.
Put on some music, lay in the sun, go under the pergola watch the birds....add a couple cold ones, plenty of water, and a nice drink or 2.....hard to want to watch TV.....even with The Lone Ranger on...come in now and then to watch the NASCAR goings on, but with the Olympics on (NBC must have a deal with NASCAR) there is no racing for these 2 weeks. Unlike some we haven't taken in an inch of the event...the Ceremonies or the meets...rather watch those hummingbirds live along side us..IMO much more calming, much more good feeling going on, add in the music, drink and don't forget that books we're reading.....
