Worst losing streak in 25+ years.
I heard Tony Larussa say in an interview once that if a team won at least half of their series played, they'd make the playoffs. I wanted to see if he was right so I started pulling and tracking data going back to 1999 and I document whether the Cardinals won, lost or tied the series for every game played. Tony was right.
Since 2000, the Cardinals have made the playoffs 15 times and have missed the playoffs 6 times. THAT's the Cardinals we're used to around here. They've been MIA for the past 5 years. In May the Cardinals were in 1st place in their division. These days they are hanging out in 3rd-4th place.
The Cardinals have played 28 series so far this year and have only won 10 of them. That's a winning percentage of 36%.That is the lowest percentage of series won after having played 28 series going clear back to 1999. A team has got to win at least half of their series in order to have a shot at the playoffs. The way things are looking for the Cardinals right now... they won't make it this year.
Cardinals play the Cubs in Chicago starting today. Both teams are awful so we'll see what happens.
