I stare at the walls..

because I don't own a cell phone.. Everyone else in the waiting rooms I've bee in are, like you said, nose deep in their phones.. until they are called, then, half the time I see them walking off STILL buried in their phones.. they literally cannot put the %@&^$ thing down long enough to walk to a different room..

I had an appt in Dallas yesterday with a kidney specialist and just got back from an echo cardiogram at a cardiologist's office today.. Plenty of waiting room time both days.. Nothing to do, nobody to talk to.. I will be the older lady you posted about.. Well, except I'm a guy.. heck, I already AM that person..
