When my family moved to the states (from Canada) they moved to one of those not politically correct, idyllic little no diversity towns in the midwest. And this was in the 60s and 70s.
Unlike you guys (M and RB ) I could have gotten by there if I wanted. But even if you seem to "fit in" you still see and hear things---and I couldn't stand it. It still exists in my mind as one of the places I have lived that I dislike the most.
I could tell stories. But everyone knows what I mean.
