that you'll always treasure.. I DO treasure my opening experiences - even the ones where the headliner treated us like black mold..
I could go on an don about stuff, but one of my favorite "bad" moments was in opening for an 80's band called Rough Cutt.. They finished sound checking about 30 minutes before the front doors were opening to the venue.. We had been on the road for a while and were "coming home" so to speak, and were excited to be doing the show in front of our home crowd - and - apparently getting to do a sound check before the show!
Well, Rough Cutt began to leave the stage - except for drummer Dave Alford.. Old Dave had a HUGE kit, and he had already sound checked it half to death, but he had an ace up his sleeve to bleed off any remaining time before the doors opened so that the opening band couldn't sound check.. so, Dave gets on his mic and says they need to sound check the TWO drums BEHIND his drum throne (seat).. His kit went all the way in a circle behind him..
Dave sound checks those TWO drums for thirty minutes.. constantly not happy with it, zero everything out and start over.. the works.. So, no sound check for us..
During Rough Cutt's show, Dave only spun around once, hitting all the drums in his kit.. ONCE! ..and it was during a lame drum solo.. but, by then, a fair amount of the crowd had already left.. We had a very energetic, awesome crowd response show.. Rough Cutt took over and slowly the place emptied.. probably used to it, which is why ol Dave treated us so poorly..
Friendship is like peeing your pants.. Everybody can see it, but only you can feel the warmth..
