anywhere in the south where some type of event relating to the Civil War did not occur. Today people's home are directly on top of the battlegrounds of most Civil War battles.
I am told that the one battlefield that today is most like it was during the Civil War is Shiloh in Tennessee. I've been there... can't speak for the forests, (most of the battlefields today have forest where it was open field back then), but there certainly is little 'modern' at Shiloh.
It's been over a decade since I was at Gettysburg so I don't know how far along they've come with the project they were working on then... which was: returning the land to same state it was in during the battle of Gettysburg. Removing trees in some places and planting them in others. - JamesJM
