I don't want this to get away from football.

If we are concerned if vaccinated people may still transmit virus, then why should anyone vaccinate?

People who have been vaccinated can still come into contact with people who are infected. The vaccinated people will not get sick from the virus but they can potentially carry it with them, at least for a short while.

The point of vaccination is not just to protect yourself though, it is to reduce the spread of the virus. If you have vaccinated a large enough percentage of the population, the transmission rate is massively reduced. The key is that large percentage being vaccinated. (70%?). When that happens it is far less likely that someone who has been vaccinated will run into an infected person. Then, though the vaccinated person won't get sick, they can still pass it on to another unvaccinated person who does risk getting sick. Those numbers have to be reduced, that's the point of vaccination.

So yeah partly the point of a vaccination is to protect the individual from getting sick, but another big reason is to reach the point where the virus doesn't have places to go and stops reproducing--which as we all know is called herd immunity.

...

Well, some people call it "herd mentality", but that another story.

Making sure that this thread sticks to football, though...

I think that this will be an interesting issue for the NFL and football outside of just next year's salary cap. Currently in the State of California, approx. 44% of its residents are fully vaccinated with another 18% partially vaccinated. In Los Angeles County (where SoFi Stadium is located), 41% of its residents are fully vaccinated with 17% partial. Santa Clara County (where the 49'ers play) is doing much better with almost 50% of its residents fully vaccinated. Though do-able, I believe that getting to that 70% figure (fully vaccinated) is going to be quite a challenge. But for the sake of argument, let's say that these counties reach that figure of 70%.

That still potentially means that up to 30% of your fans would be unvaccinated. At that percentage, though hindered, the virus would still find plenty of bodies to infect. As a result, I suspect that facility operators in California would continue to insist upon some social distancing measures out of a concern that an outbreak be traced back to a game and a lawsuit ensues. This issue would likely be mitigated to some extent in Santa Clara where the stadium is completely open-air (not sure what you would call SoFi Stadium). Regardless, anything less than full capacity means less revenue from parking, concessions, etc.

I'm sure the owners and players realize this and so I expect the NFL and NFLPA to begin to engage in vaccination campaigns in counties where the stadiums are located. Vaccination is the only way the NFL will see its profits return. That, or vaccination passports.
