after they drive to the basket they may hold their eye like they were hit in the face or grab a body part and then get up and play 30 seconds later. Watch Lakers regularly and they all do it....sometimes they are not even touched.
I get why both do it:
Soccer- especially inside the box you get a PK which is almost automatic goal. A goal is huge in a low scoring sport.
A foul can also create a set piece which makes scoring easier too.
In basketball it can lead to free throws as well as put another player in foul trouble or even remove a strong player from a game.
