Yeah, I had an old Fender Precision fretless bass that I repainted a couple of times and it looked decent. It was rough when I started, so I wasn't too worried. This LP is the translucent wine red finish, and I'd hate to try to get the stain right and then the laquer over-coat... I'm pretty sure it would be even worse when I got through with it than it is now. I don't even remember how long I had it before I noticed it, the light has to kind of hit it just right.
The weird thing is it's only on the front. the back, sides, neck... everywhere else is perfect, just splotches on the front. And if you use a little polish, like some scratch remover, and a white cloth, you get a little red color off of it, but it never removes any of the "stain". Even where there are very fine "marks" (almost like brush marks on the edges of a splotch) never get any lighter.
I wish I could show it to you, it's weird stuff. Rick the Guitar Guy said he's never seen anything like it, and he's worked on guitars for 30 years.
