I heard Eric Clapton quoted once as saying that his ultimate goal was to bring a tear to your eye by playing a single note.
I forget which one, but one of the other guys in ZZ Top said Billy Gibbons thing wasn't particularly playing fast, his thing was tone.
I've been taking guitar lessons since November. Been playing for 50 years, but never took lessons before, so I've been playing more the last six months than I have in probably 40 years. I never considered myself a very good guitarist (you know what they say, you're either a guitarist who sings a little, or a singer who plays a little guitar... I was a singer who played a little guitar).... but the first thing I learned when I started taking lessons was that I wasn't even as good as I thought I was. I'm learning stuff I've never really tried before, but I feel like a total beginner.
