According to the article, the stats for the USA came from the National Center for Health Statistics. Nothing in the article qualifies their numbers.

The quote you refer to comes from an article about Europe and specifically Britain. That was a study done by Louis Appleby, who is a researcher on suicide and self-harm at the University of Manchester. That article is published in the medical journal BMJ. It's Appleby you're quoting. He says of HIS study that "These are early findings."

No one says that about the National Center for Health Statistic numbers for the USA that Rambro's posted article is based on.
