the single greatest invention in history.
The Giant Dipper in Santa Cruz will always be my favorite. When I was a kid we would spend half our vacation time at Santa Cruz and the other half at Yosemite... I preferred Yosemite but the Giant Dipper was the highlight... well, that and those Boardwalk penny photo's of skimpily clad ladies you could get when your Mom wasn't looking.
I have to believe you visited the Pike in Long Beach? I think that coaster was called the "Cyclone"? Used to go out OVER the ocean. Long Beach used to host a marching band competition for the state of Ca.... we went every year and spent every second of free time on the Pike... usually riding the Cyclone over, and over, and over, and over. Once I rode it I think 11 times in a row.
The Giant Dipper is still running... Cyclone is long gone. Not many of the old wooden framed coasters left... I think Magic Mountain has one, maybe two. Those are the only ones I'm aware of still operating in Calif. - JamesJM
