well, not a liar, but a very very confused person.
I was in the Bitterroot, ohhhh, a few times but once on an Elk hunting trip. We rode in on horseback, 2 days. IOW, deep into the wilds of the Bitterroot.
Now first.. I have a very good sense of direction... excellent, if I do say so myself. I don't get lost. I have nearly a photographic memory for places. Even when in the wilds I know exactly where I am at all times. But then came the Bitterroot.
First day our guide took us down a ridge to a rock outcropping with a good view. Straight down the ridge. The next day my cousin and I wanted to return to that spot, and did, without the guide. Nice view, good place to hunt... but for me something mysterious had happened when the guide had taken us down the day before. On the way down, (pretty far), we were atop the ridge, straight from our tent... but on the way back we crossed a deep ravine... arriving right at our tent. that had kept me up most of the night... how could that happen?
So when my cousin and I went down we stayed awhile, scoping the area, then on the return I refused to take the ravine, staying on the crest of the ridge... and we did NOT end up back at our tent. We found our tent... but now I was in the twilight zone.
On about the 5th day we again went down the ridge, and again straight down from our tent, crossing no ravine. On the way we crossed the ravine exactly where our guide and led us on that first day. Straight back to the tent. So in case this is confusing here it is straight forward:
To get to the rock outcropping you HAD to go down the ridge, staying on the ridge, crossing no ravine. To return and arrive at the same place you had to cross the ravine.
Scoff, as I know you will. But I'm telling you... the Bitterroots make the Bermuda Triangle look like the interior of your bedroom. - JamesJM
