It's not much consolation, but I just wanted to say that you are fortunate to have had such a long and meaningfuI friendship with a neighbor. I know the hurt is deep from her passing, but the memories you have of your relationship with her and her husband through the years are rich and many. Not everyone can say that. I sure can't. I have never had a relationship like that in my adult life. Even so, I can imagine the grief you must be feeling right now. John is going to need your friendship now more than ever so it's nice for him that you are close by. It's never easy to deal with the loss of a loved one, but it's even tougher for us seniors to do it. Hopefully, with love and faith... he'll be alright.
