We live in a small cul de sac where everyone is everyone's best friend. It is so close we have lived here for almost 30 yrs. Our very closest friends are a couple across the street. He is the Ferrarri expert I've spoken to over the years hear on this board. He is from London and his wife is a So Cal gal. My wife is very, very, close to Donna-his wife. She is like a sister to both of us. For the last couple of years she has suffered from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis meaning no known origin. It is a debilitating disease that essentially destroys the lungs capacity to take in oxygen. It is progressive and there is no cure. We are as close to them as close as we are to our son and his family. Because of our proximity maybe even more. For the last couple of years we've had dinner with them every week either their house or ours. During her recent struggles these last months we have prepared dinners for them and carried them across the street. My Springer Spaniel (Pepper) has spent weekends with them while we were gone. Donna has loved Pepper who would sleep with her on her bed. As her inability to absorb oxygen grew worse she became more house bound and lately bed bound.
Today we lost Donna. She was young just beginning her 70s. I'm using this board not for sympathy but to express my feelings as my wife is crying on the couch. Donna was , as I said, like a very close sister to us but especially Barbara. I look across the street and see the light on. I know John is with his daughter but she will shortly return to New York. We spent a lot of time there today but now is a time for just the two of them together.
Tomorrow morning I will wake up and -like Rami said re his cat-and for the first couple of seconds I will think its is another morning. Then it will hit-it is not like any other morning. We have lost someone we loved. And my friend from England is now alone.
