I bet many regular Germans knew what was happening but I bet few condoned it. What were they to do?? Report it??? Then have the SS go after them and maybe their entire families? My Dad grew up in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. When he was a young boy, the old Air Base there had a POW Camp with many Germans. He actually befriended several of them who would do work details on the road near his house. He would even walk to the perimeter fence and chat with them. One even made a small toy for my Dad, carved from a piece of wood, in the camp Wood Shop.
The neighborhood I grew up in, we had a neighbor my Mom had know all of her life. She was an English lady. In the early 1930s, she married an Austrian, who was in the German Military, as Hitler came into power. She once told my Mom that she was on the road during a German Military parade and was an ARM length from Hitler as he was escorted to a building from the parade. This was early in his time in power. When things got ugly, her Husband attempted to flee Germany. She never knew what became of him and assumed he died. She went on to be a part of an Underground resistance. She told my Mom that most Germans wanted Germany to prevail but many did NOT want them to prevail the way Hitler was leading.
