Lou Brock was considered "Cardinals Royalty". It was always a treat to see all the living "Cardinals Royalty" in their red jackets on opening day being paraded around Busch stadium in convertibles, and then standing together in the infield to greet each current player one by one. We watched Stan Musial succumb to poor health and old age and you just knew when he made his last appearance on opening day, that it would be his last one. Lou Brock had also been in ill health for the last several years suffering from diabetes and multiple myeloma. He had a leg amputated in 2015 and then 2 years later got the cancer diagnosis. The last couple of years he worked really hard to recover well enough not to miss opening day. It got to the point where he had to use a cane and he was frail... but he made it to opening day which was such a treat for the fans! Unfortunately, Bob Gobson is probably the next one to leave us. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and he's 84 now so he may not be with us for long. It's sad to watch that list of Cardinals greats dwindle down but there's just no way around it. It's gonna happen. They sure are loved and revered in St Louis.
