My neighbor, the English guy, who works for Ferrari (he's the one in the movie Le Mans with McQueen) says the principal reason the cars went to paddle shifts was to give the driver more control over the car. I.e. both hands on the wheel. Control = safe; less control=less safe. Besides if your going up to 200 mph control is even more crucial. The paddle shifts on formula 1 cars use a computer that changes the gears automatically. I think my Subaru does the same thing-and for the same reasons.
