The main reason is safety. You can keep both hands on the wheel. There's a reason formula one race cars allow the driver to use paddle shifts making them a semi automatic driving system. Don't want to sound like a Driver's Ed high school teacher but with both hands on the wheel your vehicle is in far better control. Another reason for me is the discomfort in constantly lifting my left foot up and down-I have hip replacements in both legs. I drove an MG for a few years and a Mazda Miata so I agree its more fun using a stick. However, as you get older you tend to value comfort and safety.
Yup. As things start slowing down with age, I opted for safety over fun and got my first automatic when I was 66. I could still do it if I had to, but I'm retired from driving stick shifts in my every day vehicles.
