My whole life.
It doesn't seem that uncommon to me.
It wasn't uncommon to me either. For people in our generation, a stick shift was a lot more common than it is now so most of us knew how to drive with one.
I think I mentioned here before that 5 years ago when I was going through chemo, when I arrived at the Infusion Center in my 2000 Mazda 626-LX, they had valet parking for cancer patients. The people who actually drove and parked patients' cars let parking all looked like they were around 20 years old. Only... no one on the parking/valet team knew how to drive a stick so whenever I wanted to use their services, I had to valet park my own car!! Ain't that a kick in the head? I guess they don't teach how to drive a manual transmission in Driver's Ed anymore.
I tried to teach my 20-something son in law to drive my Ranger. He just plain gave up. It was if I were asking him to build a house on his own with just stone tools.
