Made it until about 4am... 6:30am right now... I need more sleep.
Perseids last night were the best I've seen in some years. Not spectacular but very good. Went out about 9pm. There were two peaks for me... from 10pm to 11pm then again about 3am to 3:30am... however, the stars were falling the entire night. I didn't seen any one 'great' fireball but I saw fireballs... perhaps 12-15 of them... into the hundreds of very small, dim, and quick shooting stars. And dozens of not quite 'fireball' level but darned good.
The astronomers got it right... they came from all over the sky but there was a pattern... falling N to S, (nearly all ending about directly overhead to just past), with many others spread randomly across the sky. Even a few in the low S. Until 3am I was mostly watching while lying with my head to the S... so no doubt I missed many in S and behind me. At 3am I turned with my head to the east so looking mostly west and those from 3am to 4am were very consistent in 'area' and direction AND duration.
Until 11pm, (or about), my oldest daughter and two of her kids were out with me... they had a great time and there were enough to keep them from growing bored. After 11 there was only me and Batman, (our outdoors cat).
No doubt I'll be out again tonight IF I can catch a few naps today. - JamesJM
