Devitation.... magnetic north is not directly on top of the earth. The deviation varies from locale to locale.... ie: Here, it used to be -14º East, (back on my old aeronautical charts). Which would mean that a compass would not point to the actual top of the earth, (or true north), but rather 14º's to the east of true north. (magnetic deviation can and does fluctuate).
I checked your home town... 6º East.
roads are usually aligned true north. Probably your home street, (most likely), is either true north and south or east and west. Go out with a compass and see where north on your compass points... it most likely will NOT be lined up with your road. Maps are aligned true north and south.
From the Spielberg film.

Abraham Lincoln: A compass, I learnt when I was surveying, it'll point you True North from where you're standing, but it's got no advice about the swamps and dessert and chasms that you'll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp... What's the use of knowing True North?
