Devitation.... magnetic north is not directly on top of the earth. The deviation varies from locale to locale.... ie: Here, it used to be -14º East, (back on my old aeronautical charts). Which would mean that a compass would not point to the actual top of the earth, (or true north), but rather 14º's to the east of true north. (magnetic deviation can and does fluctuate).
I checked your home town... 6º East.
roads are usually aligned true north. Probably your home street, (most likely), is either true north and south or east and west. Go out with a compass and see where north on your compass points... it most likely will NOT be lined up with your road. Maps are aligned true north and south.
