i had the same issue with my old maglites with D cells and a mini mag with AAs

I drilled a pilot hole in the battery, then inserted a lag bolt in the pilot hole to get get traction on the battery and I was able to pull the batteries out.

BTW< i also replaced the bulb with an LED replacement, makes big difference.

Mag lites are obsolete and the new LED flashlights are much better, but those old D Cell mag lites with a LED bulb work and in addition make decent weapon.
