that offered a plant-based burger.. this was almost two years ago.. I got a regular beefy hamburger and my wife got the plant-based burger.. They looked identical when they came out.. after taking a few bites, she said I HAD to try it, so I did.. and I HAVE to admit it actually tasted better than my beef burger.. I think her's had black beans or something like that in it, but it REALLY was good.. nice char on it and great flavor.. I was really impressed..

There is an entire branch of the food industry dedicated to chemically mimicking the flavor of familiar foods. They break real things down chemically and then manufacture an equivalent with the artificial chemical flavors as a big part of the process.

artificial flavors are prepared by an elite group of highly trained professionals known as flavorists or flavor chemists, who must proceed through a rigorous seven-year apprenticeship (following university education) before they can become certified by the Society of Flavor Chemists. It is estimated that there are only roughly 500 certified flavorists worldwide. Flavorists prepare mixtures of flavors to meet consumer flavor preferences, all while following a stringent set of safety and efficiency guidelines.
